NEWBERRY COUNTY — The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office has unveiled its new inmate search web page.
Sheriff Lee Foster said the new web page took longer than anticipated, but has resulted in a robust, user friendly web page.
“We are excited to release the new web page,” said Foster. “The jail web page was constantly the most frequently viewed web page in the county and there have been many questions about when it would be available again. Well, here you go.”
The web page show an alphabetical list of those currently in jail along with their booking photograph. By clicking on an inmate, the user will see their current charges and bond amount for each church. The previous web page only showed one charge no matter how many charges an inmate had. This information appears at the bottom of the page.
In a new enhanced feature, the user will be able to use a search calendar and search all of the inmates booked into the detention center over any time frame within the last 90 days. This will allow citizens, media outlets, and other organizations to search the jail records as needed.
Currently, jail staff has to prepare a list and email or fax the information out upon request.
“We are excited about this new web page and hope that the citizens of Newberry County find it another great way the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office strives to keep the partnership between law enforcement and community growing and informed,” said Foster.
When asked about the purpose of the web page, Foster said the S.C. Freedom of Information Act states in section 30-4-30(d)(3) that a law enforcement agent must make available for public inspection documents identifying persons confined in any jail, detention center, or prison for the previous three months.
All information is removed from the website after 90 days from the date the person is released from custody or when an expungement of those records is ordered prior to the 90 days. The records are still available unless expunged by normal Freedom of Information Act guidelines.
Foster also pointed out that all person arrested are presumed innocent until adjudicated otherwise by a court of proper jurisdiction.
