NEWBERRY — The Newberry Bulldogs travel to Spartanburg tonight to take on Broome High School in what promises to be an intriguing non-conference match-up between two teams looking to notch another early season win and build confidence as they head into conference play later this season.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us,” said Head Coach Phil Strickland.
After opening the season 2-0 the Bulldogs are hoping to rebound this week after suffering a tough 35-13 loss to Chapin last Friday.
“Lot of prides hurt but not too many bumps and bruises,” said Strickland.
The singular exception to Strickland’s comment is senior Zy Towns, who plays both wide receiver and corner back and will miss tonight’s game. Towns grabbed five passes for 85 yards last week before incurring a concussion in the third quarter and had to be carted off the field.
The Bulldogs will be running their normal offense tonight and have been working on picking up their assignments better in practice this week.
The Broome Centurions run an offense that the Bulldogs have not seen all season which is a bit concerning to Strickland.
“It’s so hard to simulate (in practice),” he said.
Newberry leads the series with Broome 12-7 dating back to 1982 and has won four of their last five meetings. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
