Newberry takes down two nationally ranked opponents; Whitely debars competition

BELMONT, N.C. — After a rough first day of competition, the Wolves returned to the mat with redemption and vengeance in mind. Newberry wrapped up the weekend with a 2-2 record that included two wins against nationally ranked opponents at the Super Region II Duals.

Nolan Whitely was unstoppable on the mat, recording a 3-0 finish on the afternoon. His day began with a tight 10-9 win against Lake Erie’s Forrest Glogouski. Whitely then showed up Jerry Fenner III of fourth-ranked Ashland in a 5-3 decision. He would conclude his day in a thriller where he would pick up the win in overtime over Findlay’s Mike Stewart. With the successful day, Whitely would go 4-0 over the weekend and extend his win streak to nine.

At the 157 lbs. class, Austin Palmer suffered a loss in the first day’s competition, but would go on to the secure two wins’ today. He picked up a 12-4 major decision win against his Lake Erie opponent and followed with a shutout victory over Ashland’s Sid Ohl. Palmer would end the day with a 7-3 loss to eleventh-ranked James Wimer.

Patton Gossett was as impressive as anybody at the 285 lbs. weight class, going 3-1 over the span of the weekend. He opened up with a 10-1 major decision win over Lake Erie’s Brandon Houle, and continued his onslaught with a 7-2 win over his Ashland opponent. Although dominant throughout the day, Gossett couldn’t hold on to defeat Findlay’s Gerald Beck.

He would drop the next match to his Ashland opponent, but finish on the positive end with a win by forfeit. Rocca dominated with a 20-2 tech fall and a win due to medical forfeit.

Newberry grasped a 25-16 win against No. 23 Lake Erie and a 27-19 victory over No. 18 Findlay. Newberry’s sole loss of the day came to fourth-ranked Ashland. Alex Rice (165 lbs.), Nick Weldon (197 lbs.) and Tyler Wicken (149 lbs.) each picked up one win.
