NEWBERRY — Chapin Newberry went back home down 1-0 in the best-of-three series with hopes to even the series, but came up short. Chapin Newberry Post 193/24(7-10, 5-7 league 5) fell 20-1 to Florence Post 1(17-3, 11-1 league 1) at home on Thursday, July 16.
Chapin Newberry Post were looking to bounce back with a win in game two to extend their first round series. Florence took game one with a 6-5 win at Florence Legion Field on Wednesday evening. The series shifted back to Smith Road Complex on the campus of Newberry College.
Colby Livingston got the start on the mound for Chapin Newberry Post, and he had a very short outing. Florence quickly jumped out to a big lead and didn’t look back. They scored four runs at the top of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. Chapin Newberry’s offense couldn’t get anything going at the bottom of the first inning to cut into the deficit and the score would remain 4-0 in favor of Florence.
Florence’s hot bats didn’t cool off in the second inning as they were able to add six more runs to the scoreboard with four coming at the expense of Livingston.
Livingston’s day would be done in the second inning as he gave up five hits, a home run and eight earned runs before getting pulled. Chapin Newberry would find themselves down 10-0 at the bottom of the second inning.
The third inning would not be kind to the home team either. Florence’s offense seem to be invincible in this game as they scored another eight runs in the third inning to take a 18-0 lead. Chapin Newberry’s bullpen got more than they can handle after they seem to use every arm they had available. Five different pitchers faced Florence’s lineup and none of them could stop their hot offense.
Florence would add two more runs at the top of the fourth inning to take 20-0 lead before Chapin Newberry would score their only run at the bottom of the fifth inning to at least go out with some pride. Florence would scorer 20 runs on 13 hits in just five innings due to the game being called early for the mercy rule.
Chapin Newberry would finish the day with just three hits with two coming from starting catcher Davis Ruff. Florence would sweep the series and advance to the opening round of the state tournament. Chapin Newberry Post’s season comes to a disappointing end after an up-and-down summer. They overcame a three-game losing streak at the end of the season to win their last regular season and their play-in game to advance to the playoffs. Head coach Ryan Stoudemire finishes his third season with his second playoffs appearance after missing the playoffs in 2025.
