Wolves turn in strong performances at Electric City Invitational

ANDERSON, S.C. — The Newberry College men’s and women’s track and field teams turned in an impressive weekend at the Electric City Invitational, earning a victory, multiple podium finishes, and a wave of personal-best performances.

On the track, junior Olivia Hare highlighted the women’s efforts with a first-place finish in the mile, crossing in 5:27.01. Freshman Cassidy Bouchard added a strong showing in the 400 meters, placing fourth with a personal-best time of 55.93, while Tyler Shumate led the men’s middle-distance group with a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters (1:56.00) before later posting a personal best in the 5000 meters (15:22.64).

In the sprints, Jamari Bennett and Stephone Scales each qualified in the 100-meter prelims with matching 10.82 times. Billy Bishay also recorded a personal-best 11.76, while Addison O’Cain advanced in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.78.

The field events proved to be a major strength for the Wolves on the men’s side. Kendall Parker led the way with a second-place finish in the long jump (6.64m), followed by Nigel Landrum in third (6.59m). Dejon Barber continued the momentum, finishing fourth in the long jump with a personal-best 6.47m before adding a third-place finish in the triple jump (14.13m). Landrum also secured a podium finish in the high jump, clearing 1.90m for third.

Newberry also saw success in the throws, as Jhayden Gattison recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the discus (38.90m) and hammer throw (48.05m). Kenton Proctor contributed with a fifth-place mark in the javelin (51.17m).

In the pole vault, freshman Ryan Wright delivered a standout performance with a runner-up finish and a personal-best clearance of 4.80m.

For the women in the field, Kylynn Boyd paced the group with a fourth-place finish in the javelin (39.54m), while Kiori Butler added a sixth-place mark in the shot put (11.06m). Gabriella Darazi also turned in a personal-best performance in the javelin.

The Wolves look to build off of these perfomrances as they work through the indoor season with their next meet being the Lenoir-Rhyne Invite on April 10th in Hickory, NC.
