NEWBERRY — Valeria Newcomb, a member of the Newberry College women’s soccer team, was named the Newberry College Student-Athlete of the Month for October 2015. The award is sponsored by Chick-fil-A of Ballentine.

Newcomb, a sophomore from San Diego, Calif., was a starting outside defender all season, helping the Wolves make a late season charge for the South Atlantic Conference championship.

She played in every game for a total of 1,535 minutes and was the only defender with a goal all year, scoring at Lincoln Memorial. She also helped in two shutouts over USC Aiken and Mars Hill.

She carries a grade point average over 3.5 and has been a volunteer at the Newberry Animal Shelter since September 2014.
