NEWBERRY — The City of Newberry Police Department has apprehended a subject they say robbed the BP Station at 1303 Wilson Road Wednesday morning.

Dontravious Krenshaw Wise, 21, of 726 Langford Street, Prosperity, is being charged with armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, burglary, use of vehicle without permission and other traffic charges.

At approximately 6:29 a.m. officers responded to the BP station and were told by the clerk that an African American man, later identified as Wise, entered the store brandishing a handgun, demanding money. He then went around the counter and took money from the cash register.

“He did not harm the clerk. He took the clerk’s keys to her vehicle, which was a white 2014 Chevrolet Malibu, and left the scene,” said Chief Roy McClurkin.

The incident was recorded on surveillance video, from which investigators were able to identify Wise. He was then put into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and a BOLO was put out nation wide for the vehicle.

“Investigators began interviewing people to try and find where he hangs out, they gathered that information and officers were checking on that information and came across him still in the vehicle,” McClurkin said. “They went to stop him, with blue lights, he refused and a chase ensued.”

Wise led officers on a chase for several miles, beginning in the West End community, past Oneal Street and onto S.C. 121.

“He actually wrecked and was taken into custody,” McClurkin said.

This is still an active investigation, and Wise is being investigated for other potential crimes.

“Investigators did a great job looking into this right away, identifying a suspect and getting him into custody. We are glad no one got hurt during this incident or during the chase of him,” McClurkin said. “I also want to thank the Sheriff’s Office for their help getting him into custody.”
