McMaster, Wilson win Run Off

SOUTH CAROLINA — On Tuesday registered voters from across the state had a chance to vote in the Republican Run Off to determine who would win the party’s nomination for governor and attorney general.

In the race for governor, Gov. Henry McMaster won the nomination with 183,820 votes, 53.63 percent statewide. John Warren received 158,921, 46.37 percent of the vote. In Newberry County McMaster received 1,970 votes while Warren received 1,073.

After winning the nomination, McMaster tweeted, “Thank you, South Carolina! I am so proud to be your governor. Together we will keep our state working for you. I love South Carolina!”

Warren also took to Twitter, “While last night’s results weren’t what we had hoped for, our family is grateful for the opportunity to have run this campaign for the future of South Carolina. Thank you!”

McMaster will now face Democratic candidate James Smith in the November Election.

In the election for attorney general, incumbent Alan Wilson won the nomination with 212,983, 64.97 percent statewide. Todd Atwater received 114,817, 35.03 percent of the vote. In Newberry County, Wilson received 2,061 votes while Atwater received 907.

Wilson will face off against Democratic candidate Constance Anastopoulo in the November Election.

In Newberry County approximately 14 percent of registered voters cast their ballots, which is down from the primary two weeks ago when approximately 18 percent of registered voters voted. State wide, roughly 13 percent of registered voters took to the polls.
