PROSPERITY — A Prosperity woman is facing multiple charges stemming from events that occurred on Dec. 30.

According to reports, Loraine Hiller Bowers, 65, of 119 Washington Street, has been charged with attempted murder and assault and battery while resisting arrest.

The Town of Prosperity police report states the incident took place at the Pine Street Apartments where the responding officer arrived to find five or six individuals surrounding an African American male laying on the ground.

Upon arrival, an older African American male, a resident of the apartment complex, advised the responding officer that he had witnessed the incident. The witness informed the officer that Bowers came to his residence and spoke with him. He said the victim was walking in a parking spot where Bowers parked her car and was attempting to cross the parking lot. It was at this point that Bowers began arguing with the victim, reports stated.

The witness stated that Bowers then drove her car into the victim. The victim tried to brace himself with his hands on the hood of the car, but Bowers kept driving, running over the victim, police said.

The responding officer observed that the victim appeared disoriented, was bleeding from the mouth, had scrapes on the abdomen area and was unable to speak. The police report also reported the victim sustained an apparent broken bone, severe lacerations and loss of teeth.

EMS was notified, where they transported the victim to Little Mountain where a landing zone was set up. The victim was then transported to Richland Memorial Hospital for his injuries, officials said.

Officers arrested Bowers at her residence, EMS was requested after Bowers passed out. While EMS was being requested, Bowers came to, became aggressive and had to be restrained, reports said.

During the process of being restrained, Bowers bit the responding officer on both hands stating that she wanted to die. Bowers was then transported to Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Bowers remains in custody at the Newberry County Detention Center.
