NEWBERRY – Newberry College (11-15, 7-13 SAC) swept Mars Hill University (7-20, 5-15 SAC) at Eleazer Arena on Tuesday night in a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) showdown.
Alexis Bryant came out strong tonight with 11 kills with 19 attempts giving her a .526 hitting percentage. Logan Hayward, Samantha De Jong and Alexus Horton each added six kills against the Lions. Rachel Moran and Maggie Marsh combined for 38 assists while Kensley Jordan tallied 18 digs.
Newberry jumped out early with an 8-3 lead. De Jong got the crowed into the match with a big kill to start the Wolves offensively. The Lions battled back early to cut the lead down to three.
De Jong notched another kill to keep the Wolves ahead. Newberry continued its run and pushed their lead to 10 with a 23-13 lead. The lions would battle back again to pull within five.
Madison Darby-McClure notched a kill to make the score 24-19. The Lions battled back again to pull within four when Darby-McClure tallied another kill to give the Wolves the first set.
Newberry and Mars Hill started out the second set with back and forth action. Neither team could get much of lead. The score was tied at 9-9 when the Wolves went on a four point run with kills by four different players. The Lions battled back to tie the set up at 13.
The Wolves went on another run with four unanswered points to take a 17-13 lead. The Wolves gained a big lead after that and won the second set 25-18.
The third set started the same way until the Wolves took a 14-6 lead with kills from Mary Siebert and Darby-McClure. Newberry never let up with the offensive pressure and pushed their lead to 20-10. The Lions started another run but fell short when the Wolves won the set 25-14.
