NEWBERRY- The Newberry College men’s soccer team was defeated Mars Hill 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. Before the game Newberry honored four seniors: Jalin Butler, Lucas Ferreira, Bennett Murphy, and Mario Stojkoski.

Davis Bryan took the first shot on goal at the 3:47 mark but it was saved by Connor Talbot. Mars Hill got onto the board first seven minutes in from Amine Merdjett. Cody Foreman crossed the ball for Merdjett to finish it.

Nico Vallejos looked for the back of the net 26 minutes in but it went wide left. Five minutes late Sterling Wendt took a shot but it also went wide left. Wendt took another shot four minutes later but it went high.

Gong into the second half, Mars Hill had the 1-0 lead. For the half, Newberry and Mars Hill were even on shots with eight while Brad Dixon made three saves in goal.

Vallejos took a shot 13 minutes into the second half but it went wide left. Newberry didn’t get another shot off until the 76:58 mark when Vallejos’s ball went wide right. Bryan took the last shot with seven minutes left in the game when Bryan took another shot on goal but it was saved by the Lions goalie.

For the game, Newberry took 13 shots while Mars Hill took 16 shots. Dixon made five saves in goal for the Wolves.

The Wolves are home again on Wednesday, October 28 against Mount Olive. The game will start at 3:00 p.m.
