NEWBERRY — The Newberry College women’s soccer team defeated Brevard College, 2-1, early in overtime on Wednesday afternoon.

Michelle Calmeyn was the first player to get a shot off just four minutes into the game. Calmeyn took a header but the ball went wide left. Calmeyn hit another shot 13 minutes later but it was saved by Brevard’s goalie, Jocelyn Springer.

At 17:44, Brevard’s Megan Shina took the Tornados’ first shot but it was saved by Wolves goalie Rebecca Darley. Sarah Fonger took another shot for Brevard two minutes later but Darley saved it again.

Guadalupe Magana looked for the back of the net but the ball went high at the 23:48 minute mark.

Calmeyn gave the Wolves the lead in the 42nd minute putting the ball in the back of the net. Calmeyn caught the goalie off the line and finished a flick pass from Erika Linch.

For the half, Newberry outshot the Tornados 9-3 with four on goal. Darley made three saves in goal for the Wolves.

Newberry kept the 1-0 lead until three minutes left in regulation when Anita Maryskova scored for Brevard. The Wolves were not able to take the win in regular play sending the game into overtime.

About three minutes into the overtime period, Calmeyn scored the golden goal for the Wolves for the 2-1 win.

For the game, Newberry took 19 shots with 10 on goal while Darley made four saves in goal.

The Wolves host Mars Hill on Saturday, Oct. 24 for a 12:30 p.m. game. Before the game, Newberry will honor the following seniors: Calmeyn, Alexis Carrillo, Brenda Espinoza, Amber Sanchez, Magana, and Darley.
