NEWBERRY — Newberry College defensive end Alstevis Squirewell was named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Defensive Player of the Week.

In Saturday’s 38-31 conference win over Tusculum, the senior from Great Falls had two big plays which helped the Wolves earn the win. On Tusculum’s second offensive play of the game, Squirewell earned a “trifecta” play of a sack, fumble forced and fumble recovered on TC quarterback Luke Lancaster.

Late in the first half, Squirewell suffered and injury which required his left hand to be wrapped up in a club-like manner, but he did not let this hamper his ability to make a game-changing play.

In the third quarter, he intercepted a Lancaster pass and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown to give Newberry a lead which it would not relinquish.

The preseason first team all-SAC honoree has 18 total tackles this season with five tackles for loss, with at least one TFL in each game
