HUNTSVILLE, A.L.- The Newberry College women’s soccer team fell to The University of Alabama- Huntsville, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.

Though the Wolves were pushing their offense early in the first half, the Chargers scored the first goal of the game at the 15 minute mark. Riley Ridgeway scored off a free kick from 30 yards out. Before the goal, Newberry had taken three shots. Five minutes in, Elizabeth Gutierrez took a shot on goal but it was saved by the goalkeeper, Larae Breaux. Four minutes later, Michelle Calmeyn looked for the back of the net but it was blocked and at 13:135 Brenda Espinoza had a chance to score also but it was saved by the goalie.

The Chargers kept the momentum going by scoring two more goals before halftime giving them the lead (3-0). At the 31 minute mark, Alexcia Alexander scored her third goal of the season before Sydney Pfankuch scored her second goal of the season. Alexander’s goal was scored from right in front of the goal off a rebound from a previous shot. Pfankuch’s ball was kicked over the keeper in the middle of the goal.

Going into the half, the Chargers outshot Newberry, 9-4. The Wolves had two shots on goal compared to Alabama-Huntsville who got off six.

Play was quite until 23 minutes into the second half when Newberry put one in the back of the net to cut the lead to 3-1. Guadalupe Magana scored off an assist from Lindsay Huber. The Wolves scored another goal will 11 minutes left in the game when Calmeyn chipped the ball in over the keeper from about 25 yards out.

Newberry fought hard but the Chargers took the win (3-2). Alexis Carrillo made three saves in goal for Newberry. For the game, Newberry outshot Alabama-Huntsville, 13-12 and had took seven shots on goal.

The Wolves host their home opener on Wednesday, September 16, against conference foe Catawba. That game will start at 1:30 p.m.
