CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Newberry College women’s soccer team claimed first place at the Queens University Striana Sevens Tournament on April 16. This tournament is in memory of a Queens University of Charlotte women’s soccer player who died in a car crash.

Newberry went 4-1 in the group stage by beating Queens University of Charlotte 5-0, Belmont Abbey 1-0, Pfeiffer 3-1 and Queens Alumni 4-2. Newberry fell to Belmont Abbey Alumni 2-0.

After clinching the Wildcard spot, Newberry beat Queens University of Charlotte 2-1 in the semifinals to advance to the finals, where the Wolves faced the defending champions — the Peace Passers (a women’s league based out of Charlotte).

Goals from Michelle Calmeyn and Elizabeth Gutierrez sealed a first place finish, as the Wolves beat the Peace Passers 2-0 in the championship game.

“We really enjoyed attending this tournament, as it was great competition and we love what the tournament stands for,” said Newberry head women’s soccer coach Deedee Sanguinetti. “This was a great way to finish our spring season and pushes our girls to work that much harder over the summer.”

Other teams who attended the tournament included UNC Charlotte, UNC Pembroke, Mars Hill and Limestone.
