NEWBERRY — The Newberry Wolves men’s and women’s tennis teams each pushed their South Atlantic Conference records to 6-0 this season with wins over Lincoln Memorial at the Cannon Courts on Saturday afternoon. The men won a 6-3 decision, while the women squeaked out a 5-4 victory.

MEN

Newberry 6, Lincoln Memorial 3

The Wolves swept the doubles points to power to the win and tie the school record for conference wins in a season. The win started with another doubles victory for “Los Fernandos” at No. 1, as Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous took an 8-3 win. Jordan Monosky and Jacob Svantesson earned an 8-5 win at No. 2 and Logan Atkins and Richard Zeh took an 8-6 win at No. 3.

With only two singles points needed to clinch the victory, the Wolves picked up three wins in the solo bouts. Espana rolled to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 and Svantesson clinched the dual with an identical score line in his win at No. 4. Logan Atkins took a 9-7 pro set win at No. 6 to put the icing on the cake.

The Wolves are now 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. Newberry hosts Tusculum on Thursday, March 3, in the last match before the annual spring break trip.

WOMEN

Newberry 5, Lincoln Memorial 4

The women’s team cut the match as close as they come, but thanks to a doubles sweep, the Wolves held on for the win. The pairings of Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo at No. 1 and Elizabeth Williamson and Tara Lamers at No. 2 each won by 8-3 scores in doubles action. The No. 3 duo of Kelly McManus and Paula Avellan squeaked out a 9-7 win at No. 3 that would turn out to be a key result.

Williamson and Carrillo each remained undefeated in singles action this season to allow the Wolves to win. Williamson won a 6-1, 6-3 match at No. 1 and Carrillo won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3.

Newberry is now 11-1 overall and 6-0 in South Atlantic Conference action entering a non-conference match at Erskine on Monday afternoon. The Wolves host Tusculum on Thursday before three weekend matches at the Hilton Head spring break trip.
