BREVARD, N.C. — The Newberry College women’s basketball team defeated the Tornados of Brevard College 73-63 on Saturday afternoon in their last regular season game.

At the half, Shelby Britten led the team scoring nine points followed by Meg Essex who scored six. Colleen Leung and Emily Perry both contributed four points each for the win.

Samantha Creed finished with 18 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Hannah Lepaio grabbed five rebounds

As a team, the Wolves finished 95.8% from the line and 37.0% from the field.

Brevard put six points on the board before Newberry scored. Leung made a jumper in the paint at the 8:39 mark to cut Brevard’s lead to 6-2. Scoring was quiet for the next two minutes until Britten made a jumper followed by another jumper at 4:01.

Perry got on the board with 3:19 left in the quarter with two free throws to cut the Tornados‘ lead to 11-7. Britten hit the Wolves‘ last basket of the quarter with a 3-pointer with three minutes left.

Going into the second quarter, the Wolves were down 16-10. Essex started the quarter for Newberry just nine seconds in with a jumper. Essex hit another jumper less than a minute later (9:08) before Creed went 1-for-2 at the line at the 8:11 mark.

The Wolves didn’t score again until the 5:59 mark with a jumper from Leung to bring the team just five points under Brevard (24-19). Samara Hill made a three point play at the 3:13 mark with a jumper and a free throw. Perry ended the quarter with two free throws with one minute left to cut Brevard’s lead to 28-27.

Creed tied the game at 28-28 in the first minute of the quarter with a free throw. Essex then gave the Wolves the lead from going 2-for-2 at the line after being fouled by Kadijah Watts.

Essex extended the lead to 36-30 with a layup at the 5:39 mark followed by Hill going 2-for-2 at the line a minute later. Schultz ended the third quarter with two free throws giving the Wolves a 46-38 lead.

The Wolves didn’t get on the board until the 8:26 mark when Essex made a jumper off a pass from Perry. Creed then drained a 3-pointer with 7:24 left in the game for a 54-45 lead.

Creed hit a jumper with 4:59 left to make the score 58-47 before she hit a 3-pointer with 2:54 left. Brandi Hall got on the board with a layup at the 1:48 left off a pass from Creed.

The Wolves scored their last 10 points of the game on free throws in the last minute. Creed started it off going 2-for-2 at the 1:04 mark followed by Handreck who also went 2-for-2 with 53 seconds left. Handreck went 2-for-2 at the line again with 39 seconds left, Creed went 2-for-2 with 28 seconds left and Perry ended the game with two free throws for the 73-63 win.

Newberry will host a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Catawba.
