NEWBERRY — Two members of the 2023 Newberry College men’s tennis team earned Academic All-Region honors from the College Sports Communicators, as announced by the association on May 9.

Those players are: sophomore Mateo Bivol (Bordeaux, France) and senior Marcel Schomburg (Bingen, Germany). CSC’s academic awards, including Academic All-District and Academic All-America, honor student athletes who have spent at least one year at their current institution and have a grade-point average of at least 3.5.

Bivol earned the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year award by posting a perfect 12-0 record in conference singles play and a 10-2 mark in conference doubles play. Schomburg was the recipient of the South Atlantic Conference’s Elite 23 Award, which honors the student-athlete with the top cumulative grade-point average, with a minimum of 48 credit hours.

Schomburg will graduate from Newberry College in May with a degree in health science. He was inducted into the Bachman Honor Society in April which honors the top 8% of seniors, based on grade-point average, one of the highest academic honors awarded by the college.
