Lady Bulldogs hit seven game winning streak

NEWBERRY — The Newberry High School Lady Bulldogs will enter the holiday season on a seven-game winning streak and are now 8-1 on the season.

They are the only team to defeat Saluda at least once this season after a 60-47 road victory on Thursday.

Trailing by two points after the first quarter, 12-10, Saluda got eight of their 17 second quarter points from the free-throw line to take the 28-20 advantage into the locker rooms.

A 9-0 run in the first 2:30 of the second half gave Newberry the lead for good and they started the final stanza on a 7-0 run to pick up their eighth straight victory over the Lady Tigers.

Before leaving the game with a leg injury, Kelsey Felks scored 18 points, including getting 14 of them in the third quarter.

Tyshyria Bates hit three baskets from behind the arc to finish the night with 14 points.

Fatima Sims got eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter while Rayanna Davis scored nine.

Kelsey Havird and Nigeria Davis rounded out the Newberry scoring with four points apiece.

Newberry won the field-shot category, 23-17, including having a 5-1 advantage in three-pointers.

The Lady Bulldogs will not be action again until Dec. 28 when they will be one of the eight teams from four different states participating in the Farm Bureau Insurance Classic Tournament at Dorman High School in Spartanburg.

Newberry will face off against the host Lady Cavaliers around 5:30 p.m. while other teams in the tournament include a team from Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina as well as their South Carolina counterparts Byrnes, Ridge View and Woodmont.

The tournament will conclude on Dec. 30.
