MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Newberry women’s soccer team’s regained the lead for a win over Auburn University at Montgomery 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at AUM Soccer Complex.

Freshman midfielder Vanessa Baird scored her first career goal in second half, which proved to be the game winner, after AUM had erased a 2-0 deficit in a span of 10 minutes. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Jacqueline Aldrete took a corner kick and crossed it to Baird, who would head it into the net in the 72nd minute to regain the lead for the Wolves.

Fourteen minutes later, Daphne Heyaime provided the exclamation point. After receiving a pass from Harms, she juke out the keeper and punched the ball in to complete a hat trick, the second of her career, after she recorded three goals and an assist against Francis Marion in 2018.

The Warhawks started the game fast and had the Wolves on the rope early on. In a five minute span, AUM pounded a fury of shots toward the net. Newberry was able to collect and regroup to provide a counter attack that led to Heyaime’s first goal. A Wolves’ defender intercept a pass a little after midfield line and kicked it down the right side of the field. Heyaime chased the ball down and dribbled past a defender before her kick hit the bottom of the crossbar and then bounced into the net to give Newberry the lead in the 16th minute.

Fifteen minutes later Heyaime would find herself in a situation for her second goal. After a foul within the box, the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native was awarded a penalty kick, where she beat the keeper to the left. The remainder of the first half consisted of the Warhawks generating a few more shots on frame, none of which found the back of the net as junior goalkeeper Jayleen Gant maintained the shutout and finish the first half with seven saves.

The Warhawks trimmed the lead to 2-1 four minutes into the half and netted a penalty kick equalizer 10 minutes later, both off the foot of Ruby Mendez. The Wolves attempted to retake the lead in the 60th minute when Heyaime made a beautiful touch for junior forward Emma Harms. Harms had nothing but open field in front of her, though AUM’s keeper would challenger her by coming out of the net and ultimately made the save.

The Wolves will return home for their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 14 against Barton at 5 p.m.

The Wolves would open their season Friday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Spring Hill.
