NEWBERRY — Over the weekend Chapin-Newberry American Legion Baseball hosted the 13th Annual North Carolina/South Carolina Challenge this weekend.

The Challenge was between Randolph County, Rowan County and Cleveland County representing N.C., versus Florence, Sumter and Chapin-Newberry from S.C.

Nine games were played with S.C. winning the Challenge five games to four.

Challenge results:

Day 1: Florence 7 – Rowan County 6, Rowan County 12 – Chapin-Newberry 9.

Day 2: Rowan County 7 – Sumter 2, Florence 5 – Cleveland County 4, Florence 10 – Randolph County 8, Randolph County 7 – Chapin-Newberry 0.

Day 3: Randolph County 10 – Sumter 5, Sumter 8 – Cleveland County 0, Chapin-Newberry 7 – Cleveland County 3.

The North Carolina/South Carolina Challenge now stands at seven wins for N.C. and six for S.C. in the 13 years of the event. This is the fourth time Chapin-Newberry has participated and the second time hosting it.

This week in Newberry County Legion baseball; Mid-Carolina Junior Legion has four games this week starting off (Monday, June 17) hosting Greenwood, Tuesday travelling to North Augusta, host Strom Thurmond on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. start, and finally on Thursday play Newberry Junior Legion at Newberry College at 5 p.m. as part of JR/SR double-header.

Newberry Junior Legion has two games this week first travelling to Aiken on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start and then play Mid-Carolina Junior on Thursday at 5 p.m. as part of the double-header with Chapin-Newberry.

Chapin-Newberry has two home games this week – on Tuesday Fort Mill comes to Newberry College for a 7 p.m. start and then on Thursday they host Lancaster as part of the double-header with the Juniors – expected first pitch at about 7:30 p.m.
