NEWBERRY — The Newberry College men’s soccer team fell to Brevard College, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon.

Play was quiet until the 20th minute when Lucas Ferreira took a shot on goal for Newberry but it was saved by Brevard’s goalie. Four minutes later, Mario Stojkoski took a shot but it was blocked by Brevard’s defense.

Davis Bryan scored Newberry’s first goal of the game 35 minutes in. Bryan scored his third goal of the season by taking the rebound from Bennett Murphy’s header.

Newberry kept the 1-0 lead for the rest of the first half. For the half, Newberry took five shots on goal compared to Brevard’s three. Brad Dixon made two saves in goal.

The Tornados tied the game three minutes into the second half when Shawn Schoenfeld crossed the ball to Ryan McPhillips who finished it.

Brevard took the lead in the 74th minute when Shawn Schoenfeld put the ball in the goal off an assist from Chris Efenecy. The Tornados increased their lead to 3-1 in the last five minutes when Gabriel Garcia scored off a penalty kick.

Newberry wasn’t able to take back the lead giving Brevard the win. For the game, Newberry took seven shots while Brevard took 14. Dixon made six saves in goal for the game.

The Wolves host Mars Hill on Oct. 24 for a 3 p.m. game.
