CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Newberry College (7-12, 3-10 SAC) lost to Queens (7-11, 5-8 SAC) in a South Atlantic Conference battle in Charlotte North Carolina by a score of 3-2 on Saturday night.

The loss comes on the heels of a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Catawba (10-9, 7-5 SAC) in a SAC game in Salisbury, N.C., on Friday.

Junior Logan Hayward carried the Wolves with a double-double with 12 kills and 20 digs on the night. Madison Darby-McClure added 13 kills for the Wolves while Rachel Moran added a double-double of her own with 25 assists and 10 digs. Samantha De Jong led the Wolves in hitting percentage with a .600 as she had seven kills on 10 attacks.

Rebecca Cochran led the way for Queens with a double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs while Jessica Raines added 13 kills. Alex Thompson added six kills and seven block assists.

The first set started with each team going back and forth. Queens had the early lead at 10-6 with an attack error by Mary Siebert. The Wolves would battle back with a couple kills from Siebert and Hayward to tie the set at 11. Newberry would score back to back points off kills from Madison Darby-McClure to take the 13-11 lead.

The set would go back and forth from there which brought us to a tie at 16-16. Newberry would score the next four points to Queens one point to take the 20-17 lead. The Wolves would get kiss from Hayward and De Jong to push their lead to 23-18. Kensley Jordan would get a service ace to win the first set for the Wolves.

The second set started with Queens jumping out to an early 7-3 lead. Logan Hayward notched a kill to start a run for the Wolves. Newberry would come back to tie the set at eight. The set would go back and forth till Queens took the 17-16 lead. Newberry would battle for the rest of the set but would fall short and lose the set 25-23.

The third set was also a see-saw set with neither team gaining much of a lead. The set was tied at 5-5 when Queens Meredith Jones broke the tie with a kill of her own but Newberry would come right back to score three unanswered to take the 8-6 lead. The match would go back and forth from there to be tied at 17-17. A kill by Alexis Bryant would give the Wolves the 18-17 lead.

Newberry wouldn’t look back from their as they went on to win the third set 25-21.

Queens jumped out to another early lead in the fourth set with the score at 11-4. Newberry climbed back into the match slowly cutting the lead to three with the score at 16-13, Queens leading. Newberry would continue their run as Queens would score four points to Newberry’s six to make the score 20-19.

Queens would hold on to their lead as they went on to score the next five points to Newberry’s one point and win the set at 25-21.

The first team to 15 points wins the fifth set. Queens’s again jumped out to an early 6-1 lead which is big in the fifth set. Newberry found themselves battling back again, which they did to pull within one point making the score 11-10. Queens went on to score the next four points as Newberry only scored one point to win the fifth set at 15-11 and win the match 3-2.

Newberry College would tally 52 kills on the night while adding 52 assists. Kensley Jordan led the way for the Wolves with 20 digs.

Catawba 3, Newberry 0

SALISBURY, N.C. — Newberry College (7-11, 3-9 SAC) lost to Catawba (10-9, 7-5 SAC) on Friday by a score of 3-0.

Freshman hitter Samantha De Jong led the way for the Wolves with 10 kills on 13 attempts giving her a .629 hitting percentage on the night. Senior captain Alexus Horton added five kills on 11 attempts giving her a .364 hitting percentage while senior captain Rachel Moran tallied 13 assists and eight digs on the evening.

For Catawba, McKenzie Garrison and Erin Morant led the way with a total of 21 kills and nine digs while teammate Kaytee Frabotta tallied 38 assists.

The first set started off with Catawba jumping out to an early 10-6 lead. The Wolves didn’t have much going for them as most of their points came off of ball handling errors by Catawba. With the score at 15-10, Catawba leading, De Jong gave the Wolves a push with a big kill to start a come-back but was quickly ended by a kill from Kaytee Frabotta. Catawba never looked back as they went on to win the first set 25-15.

The second set started with Catawba opening up the frame with an early lead at 10-5. Catawba would go on to score nine points while Newberry only scored four points. A kill by Horton started a run for the Wolves in which they would score a couple unanswered points. Catawba would stop the run with a kill by Bri Howard to push their lead to 22-15. Catawba would win the second set 25-16.

Catawba would continue their hot offense into the third set but the Wolves wouldn’t go down without a fight. Newberry kept it close with the score at 10-10. Moran added a service ace and a few attack errors by Catawba would give the Wolves the 16-13 lead. Catawba put an end to their run with a kill by McKenzie Garrison.

The Wolves kept pushing with another late run to tie the match up at 25-25 and then again at 26-26. A service ace by Catawba and a attack error by Newberry would give Catawba the win with the final score being 28-26.

Newberry College would tally 28 kills on the night while adding 27 assists. Kensley Jordan led the way for the Wolves with 12 digs.
