GREENWOOD, S.C. — The Newberry men’s golf team made the short trip to Lander University to compete in the Bearcat Classic, wrapping up round one with a team score of 293 (+5) and an 11th-place spot in the field of 22.
Harry Bolton finished out in front for the Wolves, ending round one with an individual score of 72 (E). He currently sits in a logjam tie for 33rd, but is only four strokes back from second place and eight strokes out of the lead.
Consistency was the name of the game for the Wolves, as the next three competitors finished within two strokes of Bolton. Adrian Villiger completed round one with a score of 73 (+1), slotting him into a tie for 41st-place with a number of competitors in the field.
Ben Thompson and Martin Moreno came in right on the heels of Villiger, finishing round one with identical individual scores of 74 (+2). They head into round two in another logjam tie for 52nd on the individual leaderboard.
Wrapping up the scoring for the Wolves was Felipe Garces, who closed out round one a few strokes back with an individual score of 79 (+7), good for a tie for 99th-place in the individual field of 110 with plenty of time to ascend the leaderboard.
Newberry is one of eight South Atlantic Conference teams competing at the Bearcat Classic, with the Wolves finishing round one in third amongst that grouping. Lincoln Memorial sits atop the standings after a phenomenal day one showing with a team score of 275 (-13).
Lenoir-Rhyne is also ahead of the Wolves with a team score of 287 (-1), good for fifth in the standings. Wingate, Queens, Catawba, Coker and Anderson all ended round one behind Newberry on the leaderboard.
