ROCK HILL — Justin Messersmith of Newberry men’s lacrosse has won the South Atlantic Conference defensive player of the week for his efforts against Barton.

Messersmith, a senior midfielder form Stevensville, Md., was all over the field for the Wolves and grabbing every loose ball that was contested, giving Newberry more possessions. Messersmith was able to grab 16 ground balls, which is currently a new school record. The record was previously held by Jacob Katopol who had 11 ground balls against Emmanuel last season.

Messersmith was a force in the faceoff circle, winning 24-of-33 faceoffs attempted. Messersmith set a new school record in faceoffs won, a record that was also previously held by Katopol. Kapotol had won 21 faceoffs twice last season. Messersmith also added two caused turnovers and one assits in a 20-14 win over Barton.

Messersmith was recently named South Atlantic Conference defensive player of the week.
