AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Newberry Wolves hung tight in each set, but were swept by the Augusta University Jaguars at Christenberry Fieldhouse on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 25-23.

Newberry falls to 7-10 on the season with the loss, while Augusta is now 12-6. Newberry takes a South Atlantic Conference swing to Catawba and Queens this weekend.

Alexus Horton led the Wolves with seven kills and four blocks, while Madison Darby-McClure and Samantha De Jong had six kills apiece.

Maggie Marsh had a double-double with 13 assists and 11 digs and libero Kensley Jordan posted a team-best 19 digs.

Newberry’s top hitting set was the first, as the Wolves hit .205 in the frame, but the Jaguars took an early eight point lead and were able to hold off a late surge.

The second set went back and forth until the hosts took charge with a four point rally to go up 20-16. Newberry fought back and tied it up at 22-22 on a Horton ace, but Augusta took three of the final four points to go ahead by two sets.

The Wolves swung out to an early six-point lead in the third set at 10-4, but Augusta bounced back and tied the frame up at 14-14. The jousting of score continued until 23-23 when Augusta put down a kill and a block to take the match.

Newberry hit .119 in the match, while Augusta hit .149. Newberry held superiority at the net with seven blocks to AU’s three. However, inaccuracy plagued the scarlet and gray with eight service errors, which was s deciding factor in an otherwise tightly played match.
