SPARTANBURG — Led by a strong performance from senior Taylor Lance, the Newberry Wolves women’s golf team coasted to a first-place finish at the Converse Spring Invitational, finishing with a total score of 648 (+72) through two rounds.

The Wolves led from the get-go and kept their foot pressed firmly on the pedal, shooting 323 (+35) in round one and pulling even further away from the field with a round two score of 325 (+4).

Lance was the shining star for the Wolves finishing in first-place atop the leaderboard with a total score of 153 (+9) through two rounds. Her outing was highlighted by her round two performance where she shot a 75 (+3), the best single-round performance of the day from all competitors.

Johana Lunackova was next in line for the Wolves, finishing with a total score of 163 (+19), good for a seventh place finish. The junior shot to near the top of the leaderboard with a round one score of 78 (+6), and would go on to shoot an 85 (+13) in round two.

Two-strokes back from Lunackova was senior Nabila Inak, who was the top-scorer for the Wolves a week ago at the 2019 Women’s Spring Kickoff. Inak finished with a final score of 165 (+21) through two rounds, cementing her in a 10th-place finish overall. Her outing was highlighted by a round one score of 81 (+9).

Hanne Sofie Borgen, a freshman, finished in 15th-place after shooting for a final score of 167 (+23), two strokes back from Inak. The freshman had a solid showing in round two, finishing with a score of 81 (+9) for the round.

Aubrey Guyton closed things out on the leaderboard for Newberry, finishing in a tie for 25th with a total score of 175 (+31) through two rounds. The sophomore saw an improvement from through each round, shooting an 89 (+17) in round one and an 86 (+14) in round two.

Newberry was able to defeat a pair of South Atlantic Conference opponents, with Coker College finishing in second place with a team score of 658 (+82). Catawba College was close behind, finishing in third place with a team score of 662 (+86).

The win was Newberry’s first of the 2019 season, and they’ll look to build on that success when they travel to Bluffton to compete in the Low Country Invitational hosted by Wingate on March 4-5 at Crescent Pointe Golf Club.
