Bulldogs prepare for Batesburg-Leesville

NEWBERRY — After falling to Abbeville 49-0 last week, the Newberry Bulldogs are keeping their spirits high as they prepare to take on Batesburg-Leesville Friday.

Last week’s match up proved to be a challenge for the Bulldogs with Abbeville taking an early lead in the opening minutes of the game. The remainder of the game would consist of the Bulldogs trying to hold off the Panthers, the Bulldogs would have an attempt to score in the final seconds, but the Panthers were able to hold off the Bulldogs to secure the victory.

Head Coach Phil Strickland said going into the game they knew Abbeville was a good football team.

“We knew they were good, we made lots of mistakes, but we are learning as we go,” he said.

In order to bring home the win Friday, Strickland said the team needs to get on the same page.

“We need to quit shooting ourselves in the foot and get on the same page, we have a lot of inexperienced players, so if we give them game experience they will get better as they play,” he said.

He added that there were too many blown assignments last week and going into this weeks contest that is something the team will have to work on leading up to the game, along with regrouping to get better.

Newberry currently sits 0-1 in the season while Batesburg-Leesville sits 1-1. In last year’s face off the Bulldogs walked away victorious against the Panthers 35-19.

Kick off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Mike Ware Field.
