Chapin-Newberry advances to finals

NEWBERRY — On Wednesday night at Newberry College Chapin-Newberry and Greenwood finished their game from the prior night that was suspended for rain and then proceeded to play Game three of their best of five series.

The suspended game started in the bottom of the seventh inning with no outs and a Greenwood base runner at first base with Chapin-Newberry leading 6-3. Jackie Stroud and Wesley Livingston came on to pitch and held Greenwood to just one run winning the game by the score of 6-4 to even the series at one game apiece. Jeb Fulmer got the win in the game pitching the first six innings the night before, with Wesley Livingston getting the save.

In the second game of the night Jonathan Bickley pitched six strong innings striking out seven to earn the win with Andrew Fulmer getting the save as Chapin-Newberry won the game 4-1. Derrick Hancko and Hunter Clinton had back to back doubles in the sixth inning to lead the offense. Will Kroske had an RBI single in the first inning and Price Alexander had an RBI suicide squeeze bunt in the sixth. With the win Chapin-Newberry improved to 16-5 overall and led the series two games to one.

At Greenwood Legion Field on Thursday night Chapin-Newberry won by the score of 14-9 to take the best of five series vs Greenwood three games to one and advance to the State Finals. John Steven Trammell got the win on the mound and Wesley Livingston earned his second save in as many days. The offense was led by Preston Farmer 3-4 with three RBIs, Price Alexander 3-4, three runs and two stolen bases, Will Kroske 3-5, two runs one RBI and a stolen base, Chase Hood 2-3, two runs and two RBI, and Jonathan Bickley 2-4, two runs and a stolen base. With the win Chapin-Newberry improves to 17-5 on the season and now have advanced to the State Finals six years in a row, winning the State Championship in both 2013 and 2015 along with the World Series Championship in 2015.

The State Finals start on Monday July 23 with Chapin-Newberry travelling to Gaffney for game one at 7 p.m. The finals will then move to Spirit Communications Park (home of the Fireflies) in Columbia for the final three days starting on Wednesday July 25. Game times are 4 and 7 p.m. The finals are a four team double elimination tournament similar to an NCAA Regional Bracket. This year the State Champion and the runner up will both advance to the Southeast Regional in Asheboro, N.C.

Opening ceremonies will be prior to the 4 p.m. game on Wednesday with the South Carolina National Guard supporting the event with a Black Hawk helicopter on display for guided tours and the Colors being presented by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. On Thursday, July 26, local baseball legend Billy O’Dell will join Sumter Legend Bobby Richardson in the pregame ceremony prior to the 7 p.m. game. Additionally local vocalist Kristin Caughman will sing the National Anthem

on Friday prior to the 4 p.m. game for the closing ceremonies. Tickets are eight dollars per game and can be purchased at the gate.
