Newberry American Legion Juniors claim two victories

NEWBERRY — On Monday three Newberry American Legion Post 24 Juniors pitchers teamed up in the shutout victory against Clover Post 38 in the first round of the American Legion Junior state playoffs.

Newberry Juniors defeated Clover 9-0 at Newberry College as three pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Blair Rogers induced a ground out from Garret Fergurson to finish off the game.

Newberry Juniors got things moving in the first inning. Lawson Brand tripled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. Newberry Juniors scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth inning the team tallied four runs. The big inning was driven by a triple by Whitley, a single by Nic Demasi, and a double by Lawson Brand.

Colby Haralson took the win, he allowed four hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out four. Gunnar Erickson and Blair Rogers entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Ryan Welch took the loss for Clover. He went one inning, allowing four runs on five hits.

Newberry Juniors tallied 12 hits. Riley Summer, Jarrett Whitley, Blair Rogers and Lawson Brand all managed multiple hits for Post 24. Brand, Rogers, Whitley and Summer each collected two hits to lead the team. Post 24 didn’t commit a single error in the field. Jarrett Whitley had the most chances in the field with seven.

On Tuesday, in Game Two, Newberry American Legion Juniors claimed victory blow-out fashion. Newberry Juniors had all cylinders firing on offense on Tuesday, winning big over Clover 9-3

In the second inning, Newberry Juniors got their offense started. Stanton Hester drew a walk, scoring one run. The team notched four runs in the fourth inning. Offense in the inning was led by Bryson Holland and Nic Demasi, both sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

Hayes Waites took the win for Newberry. He went four innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four. Luke Kennedy and Gunnar Erickson entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Caled Cox took the loss for Clover. He surrendered four runs on eight hits over two and two-thirds innings.

Newberry Legion Post 24 Juniors racked up 18 hits on the day. Riley Summer Nic Demasi, Stanton Hester, Bryson Holland, T J Hartline, Lawson Brand and Dustin Hendrix all collected multiple hits for Newberry. Nic Demasi and Riley Summer each managed three hits to lead Newberry Legion Post 24.

With Tuesday night’s win Newberry American Legion Post 24 Juniors will advance to the second round of the American Legion Junior playoffs. Newberry will host York in a best of three series Monday July 16 at Newberry College with game 6 p.m. Game two will be at York Middle School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. If necessary Game Three will be back at Newberry College on Wednesday. The winner of this series will advance to the State Tournament in Georgetown starting on Saturday July 21.

Series winner will advance to the American Legion Junior State Tournament to be held in Georgetown, starting July 21.
