INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Newberry has been selected to participate in the 2018 NCAA Men’s Golf South/Southeast Regional, which will take place at Rock Barn Country Club in Conover, North Carolina May 7-9.
The Wolves, currently ranked seventh in the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll and eighth by Golfstat, earned an at-large bid to the tournament. Newberry is ranked second in the Southeast Region behind USC Aiken and one slot ahead of Columbus State.
Newberry is led by South Atlantic Conference Golfer of the Year Carlos Leandro, who is ranked 13th nationally by Golfstat, and 16th-ranked Spencer Skiff. Ben Thompson (76th) and Harry Bolton (114th) give Newberry four players in the national rankings.
Twenty teams from the South and Southeast Regions will converge in Conover to determine which seven teams will advance to the 2018 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships. This year’s national tournament will be played in Muscle Shoals, Alabama at the Fighting Joe Course at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals, May 21-25.
Newberry finished sixth in last year’s regional at The Shoals to advance to the national tournament, where the Wolves tied their own South Atlantic Conference record with a fifth-place national finish. Leandro was named a Second Team All-American with a 10th-place effort in stroke play.
