Newberry falls short in late rally to Mars Hill

NEWBERRY — The Newberry men’s lacrosse team would see their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling short to the Lions of Mars Hill, 10-9.

Both squads would come out ready in the opening minutes of the contest. Mars Hill (2-12, 1-8 SAC) would be the first on the board with a goal at the 14 minute mark. Newberry (4-13, 0-8) would retaliate with a goal of their own just one minute later.

An array of shots from both teams were taken midway the first period, but neither side was able to connect. After a goal by the Lions, the Wolves found themselves down by one. After a series of three shots, Jeremy Ross was able to even the slate to close the period.

In the second quarter, Matt Cromie would come alive with a goal, via a pass from Stone Boone. Newberry and Mars Hill would suffer a six minute dry spell late in the second period. Connor Fernandes of the Lions would revitalize the game and bring it to 3-3. A goal by Belton Bryan would give the Wolves the upper hand, but the Lions would rain on their parade to even the slate once again.

The Wolves would go scoreless in the third period, allowing Mars Hill to obtain the two goal edge heading into the fourth. Newberry would see the Lions gain a three point lead in the beginning of the fourth period. However, Ross was in no way out of the game, closing the gap to just two. With a back and forth battle, the Wolves would find themselves down four with just four minutes remaining in regulation.

Ross would take full advantage of the extra-man opportunity, cutting the score down to just three. Boone returned with an acrobatic shot of his own, off of a pass from Cromie. With short time remaining, Boone and Ross would score the final two goals of the game, but it would not be enough to down the Lions.

Ross would lead the Wolves on the offensive end with four points. He would finish the night with four goals. Between the pipes, Erick Szurley collected eight saves.
