Newberry drops to Lions

NEWBERRY — Newberry’s nine goals in the latter half was not enough to erase a Lions’ lead to drop 21-11 in their regular season finale.

Despite the Wolves’ nine scores in the second half, their defense struggled to stall the Lions’ offense during both halves.

Seniors Savannah Ohliger and Naomi Killian got Newberry going after intermission, finding the net within a minute of each other making it 11-4. Duo Rachel Dillon and Sophie Moore each tallied three goals apiece in the season finale, both collecting two apiece in the second stanza.

Monique Proctor would rack up two more goals to round out the Wolves’ scorers in the regular season finale.

Newberry nearly matched the Lions in shots and shots on goal during the second with only one shot each separating both teams.

The Wolves got off to an early advantage with a goal from Dillon in the opening minutes put Newberry up 1-0. An unrelenting Lions’ offense caused issues for Newberry tallying six unanswered goals before Moore tacked on another point before the Wolves headed into the half.

Five seniors – Naomi Killian, Molly Chester, Helen Kuhn, Alexis Kahler and Savannah Ohliger – were honored in a ceremony at halftime.

Newberry ends the season 3-14 going 1-7 in conference action.
