Wolves split the day with the Trojans

ANDERSON — The Wolves shared the day with the Trojans by splitting Saturday’s doubleheader taking Game One 13-7 and falling in Game Two 8-7.

Newberry cranked out the Game One victory winning by nearly double Anderson’s runs. The Wolves started out hot and never looked back, scoring six runs in the opening inning.

To start Danton Hyman was walked. Next in the batting order was Ben Herring who singled through the left side. Derek Olenchuk mimicked Herring, but sent his singled through the right side and advanced to second on the throw. Herring moved to third on the play and Hyman make his way home.

A single by Colin Allman to left field rounded Herring and positioned Olenchuk on third base. Freshman Kevin Clanton hit a sacrifice fly to the right fielder and allowed Olenchuk to make his way home with Allman on second.

Tommy Passerello joined in on the hitting party and doubled to right field which brought Allman to score. Tyler White’s double to left field scored Passerello easily but this opening series chased starting Anderson pitcher from the mound for an early exit.

The change didn’t faze Newberry as they added in another run via a Dalton Lansdowne singled to left field that rounded White.

With four runs added to the Wolves’ cause two innings later, Newberry would control the game heading into the bottom of the fourth 10-0. The Trojans wouldn’t stay down forever.

Anderson had an offensive outburst of their own in the bottom of the fourth with five runs being scored before the half inning could end. A hit-by-pitch would place a Trojan on base to start. Six singles to various sides of the diamond would give Anderson five runs, six hits, and leave one stranded on base. The Trojans had now eaten into the Wolves’ lead with the score now 10-5.

The fifth saw both teams’ defense keep them off the board, but the sixth reopened the scoring. Newberry tacked on a run thanks to a Lansdowne sacrifice at bat to score Passerello. Anderson countered that run, but adding two of their own coming on a single through the right side.

With insurance runs coming in the eighth and ninth, Newberry sealed the victory as starting pitcher Dylan Southerland nabbed the win and Robert Westenrieder earned his first save.

Game Two squeaked by the Wolves as the two teams battled in this back-and-forth contest, seeing the game be tied several times. A two RBI left field line home run by Clanton would crack into the Trojans’ early lead. Anderson started to pull away from Newberry in the fourth and fifth innings as they were able to tack on a total of four runs compared to two for Newberry.

The Wolves put themselves back in the game in top of the sixth to tie the game up at seven courtesy of a Clanton double that allowed him to take third base on the throw and score both base runners for Newberry.

However, a scoring drought would loom over both teams affecting the Wolves slightly more as the Trojans would tack on a run in the final inning to take the game.

The Wolves also fell to the Trojans in a back-and-forth contest on Friday 12-8.
