PROSPERITY — Calvin Morris, Mid-Carolina High School senior, has signed a letter of commitment to play baseball at Belmont Abbey.

Morris, 17, has been playing baseball since he was about five years old. Throughout his time playing ball, Morris has played first base, outfield, mainly right field and has been a pitcher.

Morris also played football all four years at Mid-Carolina and has shot archery since middle school, he currently serves as captain for the archery team.

Before choosing to attend Belmont Abbey, Morris had offers from Piedmont International University to play baseball and Emmanuel College where he was offered to shoot archery.

“Belmont was more like a family community and I could really learn well there with the others and I could really benefit from that college,” Morris said. “It was small, the professors there really pay attention to you because the class sizes aren’t so big and I just felt comfortable there the first time I visited for baseball camp.”

Morris enjoys the competition baseball brings, the family you create along the way and giving back to the community.

“For the sponsors, they are more about giving back to the community, but as the kids it’s like representing somebody, making them feel good about what they are doing for the community and making us feel good about representing them,” he said.

For Morris, having a positive mindset and setting goals plays a key role in being successful in sports.

“You turn that plan into a mindset where you just have to go out there and do what you need to do,” Morris said.

While at Belmont Abbey, Morris would like to pursue a major in physical education and minor in sports management.

“I like being around kids, ever since I was little and I’ve also worked with special needs kids in the Special Olympics and ski events because they are not able to do things that other kids can do, so it just makes me feel good about myself and I just like helping others,” he said.

Morris also works with a mission trip team that takes trips every summer to counties and states less fortunate, helping them out. He hopes to continue to help out in his own community as he heads off to college.

“I had the opportunity to coach him (Morris) in football, he worked really hard and we got a lot out of his ability and he’s just a quality kid,” said Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Louie Alexander.
