WHITMIRE — The Whitmire Wolverines captured their first Region Championship in 35 years with a 3-2 victory over Ware Shoals. Carson Gaffney kept the Wolverines in the game with an outstanding start giving up two runs over 6.1 innings. He also struck out 13. Chase Hood (3-2) got the Win in relief battling out of a one-out bases loaded jam. Whitmire was down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh when Gaffney reached on a bloop hit. Justin Brannon laid down a perfect bunt and Alan Mikel Stanley walked. The Wolverines won the game on a walk-off, two RBI single by sophomore Matthew Prather.

Whitmire improves to 10-7, 3-1 in region play.

“Carson was phenomenal. Chase did a good job of keeping it a one-run game in the seventh. The offense finally came through in the seventh inning. I am so happy for our players and coaches. I am also humbled by the fans that showed up and the kind words that people have shared about this team. This was a special night for our community and school. Ware Shoals fought hard. We stepped up and that will be something that these players will always remember. It was a good night to be a Wolverine,” said Head Coach Chris Martin.

Whitmire also dropped a non-region game at Ware Shoals by a score of 4-3 on a walk-off single. Casey Stevens started on the mound for Whitmire, throwing four innings of two run ball. Casey struck out seven and gave up two hits. Justin Brannon (2-1) took the loss in relief. Whitmire was led at the plate by Bailey Holloman who had two RBI. Matthew Prather had a 2B.
