Wingate overpowers Wolves

WINGATE, N.C. — A head-to-head battle between nationally-ranked teams favored No. 14 Wingate as No. 27 Newberry fell 7-2 Wednesday.

The Bulldogs opened doubles play with sweep to take the 3-0 edge heading in singles action.

Jose Navarro put Newberry on the board with a 7-5, 6-4 decision in the second flight to close the gap to three, 4-1. A battle between Edison Ambarzumjan and his Wingate counterpart fell short in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 1-6 to allow the Bulldogs to clinch the match. Reigning South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Player of the Week, Angel Pizarro, tallied another point for the Wolves with his three-set 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 decision.

Wingate would take the remaining two singles matches to walk away with the 7-2 victory.
