NORMAN, Okla. — The success of this season has lifted the Wolves from the eighth spot in the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll to a tie with Barry for fourth, in the ranking released on Mar. 30.
The Wolves have also garnered a first-place vote for the first time in program history. Atop Newberry are West Florida, Florida Southern and Nova Southeastern. Barry remained in the fourth spot, their position in the last coaches’ poll, while Newberry leapt four spots to tie with the Bucs.
With a school-record five tournament wins, the most of any Division II team this season, Newberry has competed in two tournaments since the previous poll was released. The Southeastern in Valdosta, Ga. saw the Wolves battle from fourth at the end of the first round to defeating every team in the top 10 with a one-stroke victory that came down the final hole. Most recently, at the NCAA Division II National Preview in Muscle Shoals, Ala., the Wolves finished second overall on the course that will host this year’s NCAA Championships.
The Wolves are also fourth in the most recent Golfstat rankings behind the same three teams in the same order. Four Newberry student-athletes are ranked among the nation’s best individuals: Spencer Skiff is No. 11, Carlos Leandro is No. 14, Ben Thompson is No. 78 and Harry Bolton is 79.
