Middle of the pack finish for Wolves after first round of SAC Men’s Golf Championship

ANDERSON — Newberry finished the opening round of the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf Championship in sole possession of sixth place at 14 over par with one player landing in the top-10.

The Wolves sit six strokes behind leaders Queens and Lincoln Memorial, who are tied at eight shots over par after round one. Only one shot separates the fourth through tenth place contenders with Newberry sitting in-between Coker and Wingate at sixth place.

SAC Men’s Golfer of the Year Carlos Leandro garnered yet another top-10 finish going one stroke over par to land himself in a tie for sixth with a first round score of 73. Leandro had a shaky start on the front nine, but finished strong in the latter half including a pair of birdies to keep the Wolves in contention.

Spencer Skiff and Harry Bolton also rebounded from tough first halves to cut their score to four-over 76 to finish in an eight-way tie for 21st.

Ben Thompson finished a stroke behind Skiff and Bolton at five shots over par, placing him in a tie for 29th. Another stroke separated Thompson from Rob Cull who rounded out the Wolves at six over par to put him in an eight-way tie for 36th.
