NEWBERRY — Get to know your Wolves, Morgan Wagaman, Maggie Herrera and Paige Meyer.

Name: Morgan Wagaman

Major: Elementary Education

Favorite Food: Fruit

Wagaman, a freshman, is originally from Greencastle, Pa. she decided to come to Newberry because of the atmosphere, softball program, and environment.

Prior to Newberry she played travel ball for the Lady Orioles Gold and was a four-year varsity starter who won three division championships. Her travel ball team qualified for ASA Gold Nationals in Salem, Ore. where she started at second base.

Her training is predicated on giving 100% effort all the time and listening to what others say that are keys to her success.

Some interesting facts about Wagaman are…

She has several pre-game rituals which include a trip to Dunkin’ Donuts, listening to music, and playing hacky sack with the team. Her favorite athlete is Bryce Harper and her favorite team is the Chicago Cubs. Her favorite hobby is playing basketball. She has completely memorized the lyrics to “Buy you a drank” by T-Pain. Wagaman has also been to Australia.

Her greatest athletic achievement/moment is getting a collegiate softball scholarship.

Name: Maggie Herrera

Major: PE – Teacher Certification with minors in coaching and business

Favorite Food: Breakfast, Mexican and Pasta

Herrera enters her second season with the Wolves softball team and hails from Elgin, S.C.

“Newberry offered both my major and softball,” said Herrera. “In addition, the softball girls made Newberry feel like a home and family from the very beginning.”

Herrera was a four-year letter winner and a NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete. She was also named a 4A All-Region selection in 2016 and team MVP. In 2015 she won the Bengal Award and was named by High School Sports Report an All-State selection.

In her training she tries to always be mentally tough and hype herself up throughout practices and games.

“I found this video on Facebook that really spoke to me, so I constantly refer back to it whenever I feel my confidence lacking,” Herrera said. “I am always telling myself ‘I am great’ throughout my day.”

Some interesting facts about Herrera are…

She cheers for the Clemson Tigers and Cincinnati Reds. Her favorite athlete is Kayla Hunt. Her pre-game ritual includes not untying her cleats. She has completely memorized the lyrics to “Yours Truly, Austin Post” by Post Malone. Her favorite hobby is playing ultimate Frisbee.

Her greatest athletic achievement/moment was upsetting a rival team her senior year with a final score of 2-1.

Name: Paige Meyer

Major: Elementary Education

Favorite Food: Baked Potatoes

Meyer is a freshman infielder from Georgetown, Ind. Her decision to come to Newberry came from Head Coach Ciria Triplett encouraging her to come play softball with the Wolves.

Prior to Newberry she played softball at Floyd Central as the second baseman. She was a two All-Conference selection, as well as Sectional and Regional Champion. During her senior year she garnered more accolades such as Third Team All-State, All-Conference, was a finalist for Player of the Year All-Area, MVP, All-American Scholar Athlete, Sectional Champion, All GPA team, and Golden Glove winner.

In her training, practicing sun balls and getting live pitches thrown to her are two keys factors to her success.

Some interesting facts about Meyer are…

Her pre-game ritual includes playing hacky sack with the team. She cheers for the Chicago Cubs where her favorite athlete is third baseman Kris Bryant. She has completely memorized the lyrics to most of the songs from High School Musical. Her favorite hobby is sleeping.

Her greatest athletic achievement is getting the opportunity to play college softball.
