NEWBERRY — McKenzie Barneycastle has been named by HERO Sports as the freshman with the best start to the Division II softball season, the award from HERO Sports recognizes the individuals on the basis of performance throughout NCAA sports.

Barneycastle’s notable batting average landed her on HERO Sports’ radar, ending the week of Mar. 8, hitting an impressive .576 over Newberry’s sixteen games.

The freshman outfielder has started in a total of 19 games thus far for the Wolves and has appeared in the batter’s box 56 times. Barneycastle is currently batting .482 with 18 runs, 27 hits, eight doubles, a triple and seven runs batted in. Her fielding percentage is .917 percent as well.

Barneycastle received 55.12% of the votes going head to head against other freshmen from four other schools. The final tally of 1,622 votes saw Barneycastle nab 894 of them.
