DANBURY, Conn. — The Eastern College Athletic Conference has selected junior center Meg Essex for the All-ECAC First Team. This is Essex’s second postseason honor after being named to the South Atlantic Conference First Team.
She concluded the 2017-18 season with 475 points, 15 steals, 36 assists and 240 rebounds. Essex netted 1,000 career points on Jan. 10 against Queens and 500 career rebounds vs. Wingate on Jan. 24. Her nine double-doubles this season amounted to 12 on her three-year career. She started in 27 of the 28 games while averaging 17ppg, 8.6rpg, 1.3apg and 1.9bpg.
A consistent option for Newberry, Essex shot 51.8% from the field and 59.7% from the charity stripe. She etched her name in Wolves’ history in various categories with her impressive junior campaign.
For points in a single game, she is tied in that spot with her 34-point outburst at Lincoln Memorial. Her name also appears in the single game category for blocks in a game at eight and seven twice. In the single season category, she is tied for seventh at 475 points and owns the seventh spot for blocks at 54. Her 204 blocks places her at No. 2 in that category. Essex needs only 21 more to tie recent Hall of Fame inductee Tiffany Johnson at 225.
