Lunackova on all-tournament team as Wolves take third

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — Newberry made up nine strokes on second-round leader Shorter in Tuesday’s final round of the Agnes McAmis Memorial, but the Wolves and Hawks were both unable to hold off hard-charging Tusculum as the Pioneers claimed a win on their home course.

Newberry had its second-best round of the tournament, firing a 29-over 317 to cut what had been a 12-stroke Shorter lead down to three. Taylor Lance (78) and Aubrey Guyton (79) and Brette Bryant (81) each had their best rounds of the tournament on the final day.

Johana Lunackova fired a seven-over 79 to finish 15 over for the tournament and secure a fifth-place finish, her second all-tournament team appearance of the spring. Taylor Lance was eighth overall five shots back of Lunackova, marking the third time this seasons she has finished inside the top 10.

Aubrey Guyton was just outside the top 10 in a two-way tie for 11th, finishing 27 strokes over par. Nabila Inak was 13th overall, with Bryant’s 19th-place finish placing all five Wolves in the top 20.

Tusculum entered the day 19 strokes behind Shorter and seven behind Newberry, but the Pioneers exploded for an eight-over 296 on Tuesday, that was the best single round by any team in the field. Tusculum finished with a 72-over 936 for the tournament, 11 shots clear of the Hawks and 14 better than Newberry.

Tusculum teammates Ciara Rattana and Cydney Murrell finished atop the leaderboard and eight- and nine-over, respectively. King teammates Roxane Nataf and Nicola Robertson took third and fourth places ahead of Lunackova.

The Agnes McAmis is the last regular season tournament of a successful spring for Newberry that saw the Wolves finish second at the Pfeiffer University Invitational and tie for the win at the Coker Cobra Women’s Golf Invitational.
