DUE WEST — The Whitmire varsity baseball team defeated Dixie 6-4 in a Region 1A game. Carson Gaffney (3-0) was the winning pitcher going 6.1 innings, giving up four runs (only one ER), seven hits, and striking out four Hornet batters. Casey Stevens got his first save recording the final two outs.

The Wolverines gave up four runs in the first inning which was bolstered by three errors. The offense got going in the second inning, highlighted by a Casey Stevens two RBI single. The game was a pitcher’s duel until Casey Stevens led off the seventh inning with a single. Bailey Holloman hit a 1-1 pitch for a 2-run home run.

Holloman was two for four, HR (two RBI). Casey Stevens and Carson Gaffney were also two for four.

“Carson looked a little off in the first inning. He settled down and was a bulldog the rest of the night on the mound. I cannot say enough about how he competes. The defense was shaky at best and has to improve if we are going to ultimately reach any of our goals. Offensively we were better. There were some great ABs by Hood, Stevens, Gaffney and Stanely. Bailey Holloman came through when we needed him,” said Head Coach Chris Martin.

Whitmire improves to 6-6, 2-1 in Region 1A. They will have a chance to capture the Region Championship on April 10 as they host Ware Shoals at 7 p.m.
