Newberry bested by Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. — Newberry met third-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne in a South Atlantic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon. The Bears’ smothering offense disrupted the Wolves and created inopportune scoring for Newberry in the 17-4 loss.

The Wolves (4-6, 0-3 SAC) were held to just five shots in the first period. Junior Belton Bryan broke the scoring streak for the Bears’ (10-1, 4-0 SAC), putting Newberry on board off of an assist from Matt Cromie.

Lenoir-Rhyne would answer the Wolves point with seven consecutive goals to give the team the 12-1 lead. Newberry would not strike again until late in the third period, when Stone Boone would find a slashing Dylan Mansur.

Jeremy Ross would find the net with a little under ten minutes remaining in the game. Daytin Vidovich would end the scoring for the Wolves at the eight minute mark.

Although Newberry would have the 42-40 edge in shots on the afternoon, the Wolves would only connect with 18 of them. Both teams would combine for 39 turnovers in the game. Goalie Erick Szurley battled in the net collecting seven saves in the contest.
