SUMTER — Newberry wrapped up their nonconference schedule with a set of victories on the road over Belmont Abbey and USC Sumter Saturday afternoon. The Wolves kicked off the day with a 9-0 sweep of USC Sumter followed by a 6-3 win over Belmont Abbey.

Newberry 9, USC Sumter 0

The Wolves got off to a hot start with duo Jose Navarro and Alex Amble dominating the third flight with an 8-1 win to put Newberry on the board. Nikhil Mannepalli and Angel Pizarrowould take the 8-4 decision to extend the Wolves’ edge at the No. 2 spot, while No. 1 Edison Ambarzumjan and Jordan Monosky rounded out doubles with a tight 8-5 score.

Singles action continued to favor the Wolves with Pizarro sweeping his opponent in two sets 6-0, 6-0 to put Newberry within one of clinching the match. Mannepalli would accomplish the feat in his 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 spot to seal the win. The Wolves continued to add to the win column with Monosky (6-0, 6-0), Amble (6-1, 6-1), Ambarzumjan (7-5, 6-2) and Navarro (6-3, 6-4) garnering victories to complete the sweep.

Newberry 6, Belmont Abbey 3

In Newberry’s second match of the day it would be No. 2 Nikhil Mannepalli and Angel Pizarro to kick off doubles play taking an 8-1 decision. The Wolves would sweep competition again with pair Edison Ambarzumjan and Jordan Monosky securing an 8-3 decision at the No. 1 spot before Alex Amble and Jose Navarro rounded out the pack with another 8-3 win.

Ambarzumjan added to the Wolves lead picking up the 6-1, 6-2 decision in the first flight. The third flight finished next with Mannepalli at the helm to clinch the match with the 6-3, 6-1 score. Belmont Abbey took the next match over Monosky, but Pizarro won in the No. 4 spot 6-3, 7-5 to round out the Newberry victors.
