Singley to play at St. Andrews

NEWBERRY — Jarious Singley, Newberry High School senior, will play football at the next level for St. Andrews University, after signing his letter of intent last week.

“It is a good fit because it is an early program, and I wanna be a part of history. It is a second year program, so I can make something happen and build a foundation,” Singley said.

The 18-year-old Singley has been playing football ever since he can remember. For the Bulldogs he played on the offensive line, which he will continue to do at St. Andrews. He said his favorite thing about football is being around his brothers and competing together with them, and trying to get a reward.

“I’m going to miss being around the people I’ve been around my whole life,” he said.

Phil Strickland, head football coach, said Singley works his butt off and has gotten so much better over the years.

“He’s a good student, I’m glad he’s able to go on to further his career. We want to make sure he gets a degree when he comes out, but I think he’ll do well. If he continues to work as hard as he has, he will continue to contribute there,” he said.

While at St. Andrews, Singley plans on majoring in physical education. He chose physical education because of his love of football, and he wants to be around it more. He even said he can hopefully come back to Newberry High School and teach.

“I’m looking forward to meeting new people while I’m up there, and making new friends,” Singley said.

Singley’s father, Aaron, said seeing his son sign is a dream come true.

“What father wouldn’t want to see his son play at the next level,” he said.

Cassandra Singley, Jarious Singley’s mother, said they will hopefully go see every game.
