Cheer, dance win national titles

MYRTLE BEACH — Newberry’s Scarlet Poms dance and competition cheerleading teams returned to Newberry with significant hardware in tow after both squads won national titles at Cheer Ltd. Nationals at CANAM.

The Scarlet Poms won their title early on Friday, claiming the crowd in the Collegiate Pom Division. Hours later, the cheer team edged five other Division I teams, including second-place Augusta, for the championship in the Co-Ed Collegiate Division.

Scarlet Poms first-year head coach Carolyne Horton choreographed the award winning routine.

“I’m so excited to see all of the hard work pay off for the girls on the big stage,” she said.

Head cheer coach Lindsey Swygert was equally complimentary of her team.

“After overcoming adversity earlier in the week, the team worked extremely hard to perfect the routine and bring home the win. Our staff is extremely proud of what this team did today and excited for the next two weeks as we prepare for National Cheerleaders Association College Nationals in Daytona Beach,” she said.
