HARTSVILLE — Newberry leads a nine-team field after 18 holes at the Coker College Women’s Spring Invitational, paced by individual leader Taylor Lance.

Lance shows the way after the first round with a 75, three strokes over par. The score ties Lance’s previous career best, a mark that was eclipsed last week with a first-round 72 at the Pfeiffer Invitational on her way to a top-10 finish.

Lance leads by one stroke over a pair of golfers. Nabila Inak landed in a three-way tie for fourth place at 77, two shots out of the lead.

The Wolves wrapped up the first day with a team score of 310, 22 over par. Newberry placed all four scorers in the top 15, with three golfers finishing among the top seven. The tournament in made up of 48 competitors representing nine teams, including South Atlantic Conference foes Mars Hill and the host Cobras.

The next scorer for Newberry is Joana Lunackova who is tied with five other contestants for seventh. Lunackova concluded Round One with a 78, six over. Aubrey Guyton’s five-way split for fifteenth saw her eight over for a total of 80. Brette Bryant finished the day with a score of 89.

The last time Newberry led heading into the final round of competition was Sept. 22, 2014 at the Etowah Intercollegiate.
