SALISBURY, N.C. — Newberry was unable to overcome a first half burst from the Catawba Indians falling 25-8 Saturday afternoon.

Sophie Moore took the first shot for the Wolves putting them up 1-0 in the opening minute of the contest. The Catawba Indians’ Brooklyn Tilley would answer in the next 30 seconds to even the score 1-1.

Nine unanswered Catawba Indian goals were scored in the ensuing 10 minutes before Maegan Williams grabbed the draw control and found an opening to give Newberry their second goal of the half.

Both teams exchanged goals in the closing minutes of the first stanza, but it was the Catawba Indians who went into halftime up 17-8. Moore and Alexis Kahler would lead the Wolves with two goals apiece.

The Wolves were unable to capitalize on the single digit lead with the Catawba Indians pouring on eight more unanswered goals in the second to walk away with the 25-8 win.

Shots proved to be a difference maker with the Catawba Indians outshooting the Wolves 49-17. Thirty-eight of their 49 shots came during the first half, with 28 being on goal.

Catawba’s stanch defense was able to keep Newberry from reaching their own side of the field creating 24 turnovers and limiting them to nine clears.

Brandy Bowman battled in the net collecting 12 saves.
